Classification of the Church of Saint-Mathias
The Minister of Culture and Communications, Nathalie Roy, announces the classification, under the Cultural Heritage Act, of the Church of Saint-Mathias. Through this gesture, it wishes to preserve the historical and architectural values that characterize this heritage property located in the city of Saguenay.
Built in 1964 and 1965, the Church of Saint-Mathias was erected a few decades after the founding of the town of Arvida, fitted out to house the employees of the Aluminum Company of Canada, now the Alcan Company. The increase in the population of the locality in the years following the Second World War was due to the growth of the smelter's activities.
